Il clock double e la cache L1 write-back apportarono al 486 significativi miglioramenti in termini di prestazioni. Molti costruttori tra cui AMD, Cyrix, IBM, Texas Instruments divennero competitors di Intel realizzando CPU più o meno performanti rispetto all'i486DX2.
